Objectives: The study objectives were to 1) Assess the factors influencing hypovitaminosis D3 phenomenon in the sunny climate among Iraqi healthcare providers and students, 2) Find tha main relations of hypovitaminosis D3 with the sociodemographic, chronic diseases and use of medications, 3) The relationship between the symptoms of hypovitaminosis D3 and it's level in the blood.
Subjects and methods: The study designed as a cross-sectional survey (an online questionnaire) included Iraqi healthcare providers (physicians, pharmacists and dentists) and medical group students during the period from May to June/2020 by using popular social websites especially facebook groups. The questionnaire designed in google drive consisted of 33 questions that were divided into 3 parts: sociodemographic, lifestyle (outdoor habits and intake of selected diet) and health status characteristics were collected. The excel sheet used to arrange the data that can be inserted in SPSS to be analyzed and for graphs (figures).
Results: The study participants comprised of 831 Iraqi healthcare providers (physicians, pharmacists and dentists) and medical group students. The vast majority 90% of participant's aged between 21-38 years old with an average BMI of 25.3 (±4.3). The vast majority of participants 73% had blood vitamin D level of 16.15(±12.7) ng/ml in average, which is lower than the normal range(20-50ng/ml). The females represented 85.7% of the participants and 64% of them had vitamin D blood level <20ng/ml. The gender, occupation, diet(eggs and milk) and taking supplements show a significant association with vitamin D blood level.
Conclusions: There is high incidence of hypovitaminosis D3 among Iraqi healthcare providers and students. The plentiful sunshine climate is not important unless it is associated with healthy outdoor behaviors . The food has a little effect on vitamin D level in the blood also there is no diversity in food consumption among participants.
