Abstract
Objective: To determine the chemical composition of the petroleum ether extract of Chamaedorea elegans and evaluate its cytotoxic effects on the human pancreatic adenocarcinoma AsPC-1 cell line. Methods: Non-polar phytoconstituents profiling were conducted using GC-MS, preparative HPLC and FT-IR spectroscopy facilitated the isolation and structural elucidation of major plant sterols. In vitro cytotoxicity against the AsPC-1 cell line was assessed. Results: Thirty-three compounds comprising 96.5% of the total extract were identified, with major constituents including The extract contained 93% of the total phytoconstituents. The main
components were n-hexadecanoic acid (10. 43%), octadecanoic acid (6. 92%),
9-octadecenoic acid methyl ester (6. 84%), and oleic acid (30. 05%). The isolated phytosterols β-sitosterol and campesterol. The extract demonstrated robust cytotoxicity against the AsPC-1 cell line, attributed to the synergistic action of its aliphatic fatty acids and phytosterols. Conclusion: The petroleum ether extract of Chamaedorea elegans holds strong potential as a cytotoxic therapeutic agent against pancreatic cancer.
