Abstract

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease that significantly impairs patients’ daily activities and quality of life. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pharmacist-led educational intervention on disease activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among UC patients receiving biologic therapy. Methods: A pre-post, controlled, interventional study was conducted at the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Teaching Hospital in Medical City Complex /Baghdad between December 2025 and March 2026. The enrolled patients were divided into two groups: The intervention group received a face-to-face educational session and an educational booklet, and the control group received routine care. The Partial Mayo Scoring assessment scale was used to assess disease activity, while the Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire was used to assess HRQoL. This study consisted of two visits: at baseline and after a 2-month follow-up. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software (version 26.0) was used to analyze the study data. Results: The total number of enrolled patients was 95 (48 in the intervention group and 47 in the control group). After 2 months, the pharmacist intervention significantly improved disease activity (p < 0.001) and HRQoL (p < 0.001) in the intervention group, whereas no statistically significant differences were observed in the control group. Conclusion: The pharmacist intervention significantly improved disease activity and HRQoL in the intervention group.
