Abstract
Medicinal Plant Infusion Oral Films: A Novel Approach to Drug Delivery
Abstract
The aim of this work is to develop oral thin films with different flavors using infusions of Anise, Cardamom, Hibiscus, Peppermint and Sage
These oral films could potentially serve as a base for oral films containing active ingredients of therapeutic value.
Solvent casting method was employed to prepared medicinal plant infusions Oral thin films, the polymeric mixtures were casted in to petri dish, cups and ice mold
The solvent casting method was used to prepare oral thin films from infusions of medicinal plants, whereby the polymer mixtures were casted into Petri dishes, cups, and ice cube trays.
Another technique involves where a locally manufactured film applicator tool used to spread the polymer mixture in order to obtain a film of uniform thickness.
Three film formers were used in this study, namely: HPMC grad 606, HPMC grad 615 and Methyl Cellulose 60 SH grade 50.
Five medicinal plants were used in this study: Jordanian sage, anise, cardamom, and mint.
The formulated films were evaluated for Physical Appearance and Organoleptic evaluation film thickness, weight variation, tensile strength, drug content uniformity, in vitro dissolution studies, and in vitro disintegration test
All plant oral films prepared using the film applicator showed good visual appearance, with films prepared from cardamom and sage infusions showing the best results.
Likewise, all films prepared with the aid of the film applicator showed uniformity in thickness, ranging between ranging between 40 and 60 µm.
These findings suggest that medicinal plant infusion oral films represent a promising and innovative delivery system with potential for further development as therapeutic oral thin film formulations.
