The Center for the Revival of Arab Scientific Heritage at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific seminar on the morning of Sunday, October 11, 2026, entitled “Ibn al-Daybaʿ and His Scholarly Works.” The seminar was delivered by Dr. Sahar Hassan Abdul Rasul, a faculty member at the Center.
In her lecture, the researcher discussed the early stages of the life of the historian and hadith scholar Wajih al-Din Abd al-Rahman ibn Ali ibn Muhammad al-Shaybani, known as Ibn al-Daybaʿ, who was born in the city of Zabid in 844 AH (1461 CE).
She explained that, following his father’s death in India, Ibn al-Daybaʿ was raised by his maternal grandfather, the pious scholar Sharaf al-Din Ismail ibn Muhammad ibn Mubāriz. His grandfather provided him with a good education and the necessities of life. He was a reciter of the Holy Qur’an and knowledgeable in the Prophetic Sunnah, which led Ibn al-Daybaʿ to continually pray for his grandfather’s forgiveness and divine mercy.
The researcher also highlighted the significant influence of the city of Zabid on his intellectual and scholarly development. There, he memorized the Holy Qur’an and recited it to his maternal uncle, Abu al-Naja. He also studied under leading scholars of his time, including the distinguished scholar Nur al-Din al-Fakhri and al-Nafis al-Alawi. Through these studies, he mastered several disciplines, including Islamic jurisprudence, algebra, arithmetic, and Hadith. His reputation subsequently spread, and he became widely renowned for his expertise in Hadith, particularly after performing the Hajj pilgrimage on several occasions.
Dr. Sahar also addressed the cordial relationship between Ibn al-Daybaʿ and Sultan Amir ibn Abd al-Wahhab of the Tahirid dynasty. Ibn al-Daybaʿ resided at the Sultan’s court, where he received honor and gifts. He was entrusted with the task of recitation at the Great Mosque of Zabid and was commissioned to write a book documenting the history of the dynasty, entitled Al-ʿIqd al-Bāhir fī Tārīkh Dawlat Banī Ṭāhir (The Radiant Necklace on the History of the Tahirid State). These responsibilities reflected the high standing he had attained.
The seminar concluded with a discussion of his most prominent historical works, which made a significant contribution to Islamic literature. These included Bughyat al-Mustafīd fī Akhbār Madīnat Zabīd (The Seeker’s Aspiration Regarding the History of the City of Zabid), Qurrat al-ʿUyūn bi-Akhbār al-Yaman al-Maimūn (The Delight of the Eyes in the History of Blessed Yemen), and Al-Faḍl al-Mazīd ʿalā Bughyat al-Mustafīd fī Akhbār Madīnat Zabīd (The Additional Benefit to The Seeker’s Aspiration Regarding the History of the City of Zabid).
The latter work is considered a continuation of his earlier book and documents historical events and developments up to 923 AH. It provides an account of the period of the last rulers of the Tahirid dynasty and the Mamluk takeover.
At the conclusion of the seminar, attendees expressed their appreciation for the valuable scholarly material presented by the researcher.
