On the morning of Monday, September 13, 2026, the Center for the Revival of Arab Scientific Heritage at the University of Baghdad organized a scholarly seminar titled "Sufism and the Baghdad School." Held in the Nabila Abdul-Moneim Daoud Hall and attended by various professors and researchers, the seminar was presented by Prof. Dr. Zainab Kamil Karim, a faculty member at the Center. She discussed the key historical stages and milestones of Islamic Sufism—from the early era of the Prophetic message, through prominent intellectual schools such as those of Mecca, Medina, Basra, Kufa, and the Maghreb, to the Baghdad School, which is considered one of the most distinguished Sufi schools in the Islamic world. She highlighted the pioneering roles of scholars associated with the Baghdad School, such as Al-Muhasibi, Al-Junayd al-Baghdadi, Ma'ruf al-Karkhi, and Al-Suhrawardi. The speaker also addressed the characteristics of this school of thought, noting its reliance on a methodology of moderation and the harmonization of Sufism with Islamic Sharia, grounded entirely in the Holy Quran, the Prophetic Sunnah, and the lifestyle of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Furthermore, the researcher focused on the Suhrawardiyya Order as a major Baghdad-based Sufi path, highlighting Sheikh Al-Suhrawardi’s book *Awarif al-Ma'arif* (The Knowledge of the Spiritual Masters) as a fundamental reference containing the concepts and views of Baghdad's Sufis. The seminar also examined the extensive intellectual impact of Sheikh Al-Suhrawardi and his Sufi order, which extended across the Islamic East, influencing scholarly circles in Iran and India and contributing to the emergence of prominent scholars shaped by the Suhrawardi approach and the Baghdad School of Sufism.
