Description

Oral health status of an individual has a profound impact on his/her utilization of nutrients and interchangeably the nutrients an individual consumes determine the state of oral health by preventing oral diseases which leads to tooth loss. Oral diseases have a considerable impact on the masticatory function which is a first step in processing of food materials for nutrient procurement. Oral health is imperative to survival, to nourish bodies, and to mediate energy balance. In the masticatory process, intact cognitive function is equally important as competent dentition. Masticatory process is essential in modulating hormones for energy balance. For instance, when healthy individuals were given carbohydrates as a liquid and a solid, total daily energy intake increased during the liquid intervention and, consequently, an increase in BMI was noticed. Mastication requires concerted movements of the tongue to prepare masticated food for swallowing and the timing must be precise to avoid aspiration of liquids or asphyxiation. Cephalic phase responses cause a cascade of physiologic changes to alert the body for ingestion and begin the secretory process for digestion of food materials. The gustatory characteristics and metabolic value of the food guide future feeding decisions which impact overall nutrition. Adaptive changes in food choice occur in the presence of oral disease
