Abstract:
A gummy smile, clinically categorized as excessive gingival display, is a multifactorial esthetic condition characterized by an atypical exposure of maxillary gingival tissue exceeding 2 to 3 millimeters during a full smile. While primarily evaluated through the lens of facial aesthetics and dentofacial harmony, its etiology spans skeletal maxillary excess, altered passive eruption, short or hyperactive upper lip musculature, and dentoalveolar extrusion. Beyond cosmetic implications, managing excessive gingival display often intersects with periodontal health, lip competence, and psychological self-esteem, necessitating comprehensive clinical diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment approaches—ranging from gingivectomy and botulinum toxin injections to lip repositioning and orthognathic surgery.
