تعرف الصحافة العلمية بأنها تلك الصحافة التي تعمل على نقل المعرفة العلمية إلى القارئ بمستوياته المختلفة عن طريق تبسيط العلوم ونشر الثقافة على ان يكون المقصود بالمعرفة العلمية، كل معرفة تقوم بالبحث والدراسة والصدق وكل اشعاع للفكر الإنساني، وكل ما يخص المجتمع العلمي الإنساني في ماضيه وحاضره ومستقبله، وتشمل هذه المعرفة العلوم الطبيعية والتكنولوجية، والعلوم السياسية والاجتماعية وفلسفة الطبيعة وهو ما يعبر عنه بالعلم "المحكم" في العصر الحديث.
كما عرفها رائد الصحافة العلمية صلاح جلال بانها (كل صحافة تعطي القارئ معلومات ليستفيد بها في حياته اليومية وهي التي تخاطب الناس بأسلوب مبسط بعيد كل البعد عن التخصص غير المطلوب فيها وهي ليست نشر كل ما يدور في الخارج في مجال التخصص، انها الصحافة التي تجد فيها كل ما يهمك وبالأسلوب الذي تفهمه مهما كان مستواك العلمي والثقافي)
Scientific journalism is defined as journalism that works to convey scientific knowledge to readers at various levels by simplifying science and disseminating culture. By "scientific knowledge," we mean all knowledge based on research, study, and truth, as well as all that radiates from human thought, and everything related to the human scientific community in its past, present, and future. This knowledge includes the natural and technological sciences, political and social sciences, and the philosophy of nature, which is what is referred to as "rigorous" science in the modern era. As pioneer of scientific journalism, Salah Jalal, defined it, it is "all journalism that provides the reader with information they can benefit from in their daily lives, and that addresses people in a simplified style far removed from unnecessary specialization. It does not publish everything that is happening abroad in the field of specialization. It is journalism in which you can find everything that interests you, in a style you understand, regardless of your scientific and cultural level."
