Around 10% of global cancers are linked to viral infections, with 85% of cases occurring in developing countries. Human papillomaviruses (HPV), hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV, HCV), Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV), human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV-1), and Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) contribute to millions of cancer cases each year. Prevention through vaccination and other measures is the most effective strategy to reduce cancer risk associated with these viral infections.
