

The College of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Baghdad recently hosted a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This landmark visit focused on exploring avenues for collaboration to advance sustainable development in Iraq, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The dialogue seminar, held in the presence of Dean Professor Dr. Amira Mohammad Saleh and other esteemed officials, provided a platform for fruitful discussions on crucial topics like: Developing irrigation sources Expanding water users’ associations for farmers Promoting efficient and effective water management Transferring Japan’s expertise in sustainable agriculture to Iraq JICA’s representative highlighted their commitment to supporting Iraq in key areas like: Industry development and diversification Economic infrastructure strengthening Basic infrastructure rehabilitation Promoting sustainable agricultural practices and water conservation Professor Saleh expressed her enthusiastic support for JICA’s proposals and emphasized the need for further collaboration to achieve tangible progress towards SDGs. The University of Baghdad remains dedicated to leveraging its resources and expertise to address critical challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future for Iraq and the region. This event signifies a significant step towards achieving the following SDGs: SDG 2: Zero Hunger - By improving irrigation systems and water management, the initiative can contribute to increased food production and food security in Iraq. SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation - Expanding water users’ associations and promoting water conservation practices can ensure equitable access to clean water for all. SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities - By supporting the development of sustainable agricultural practices, the project can contribute to the creation of more resilient and livable communities in Iraq. SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals - The collaboration between the University of Baghdad and JICA exemplifies the importance of international partnerships in achieving the SDGs. The University of Baghdad is confident that this collaboration with JICA will pave the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for Iraq.
