Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that affects the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. When left untreated, it can lead to inflammation, destruction of the gum tissue and bone, and eventual tooth loss. Research has suggested that periodontal disease may have various systemic effects, including an impact on pregnancy outcomes.
