Diabetes mellitus is a chronic, metabolic condition marked by abnormalities in insulin production, action, or both. The metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats is disrupted when insulin levels are low. Environmental and genetic factors can contribute to the onset of diabetes mellitus. Adiponectin regulates pancreatic β-cell proliferation, suggesting that adiponectin may present a direct effect on insulin secretion. Glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody possibly serves as a surrogate marker for organ specific autoimmune disorders mediated by cytotoxic T cells.
